These are the assignments that you can do to receive extra credit points:
1. Hand in a piece of paper with your name and the translation for the words "Auld lang syne". (3 points) Due by January 11th
2. Sing verse 1 from memory - with a friend. (5 points) Due by January 14th
3. Sing verse 1 from memory - alone. (10 points) Due by January 14th

I believe that all students are natural musicians.
Without exception, each and every student can make music. Although their methods will vary, each student needs to be made aware of their unique musical abilities. I believe that it is from this awareness that students will grow to love music. It is my goal to have students leave my classroom loving music; it is my hope that they continue to love it throughout their lives. As a result, I believe that they will encourage future generations to appreciate music as they did.

I believe music is essential in school.
Music is a part of life. From a mother’s lullaby to the jingle on a TV commercial, music permeates every society. To disregard the importance of music is to disregard a substantial part of humanity. Music is essential in schools because it is a live demonstration of history, tradition, community culture, and the ambitions and accomplishments of humankind. I believe that music benefits students academically, building their cognitive and spatial skills. Yet just as important, music education builds strong citizens who are expressive and communicative, self-disciplined and goal-oriented, and who value diversity. The goal of any education is the development of students, and music education is a powerful tool for doing so, the ultimate goal being to create lifelong learners.

I believe that teachers affect students.
Teachers have the ability to teach not only the subject, but to teach the student. They influence students by the content of what they teach and the by contact they have with them. I believe that a teacher’s influence on a student is as important as the subject itself. Just as a music teacher models proper vocal skills, it is important for a music teacher to model life skills. I believe that I need to be passionate about teaching, organized and well-prepared, and sensitive to the needs of my students. I want to make a positive and lasting impression on my students. I want them to know that I see them not just as students, but as individuals that can succeed in music and in life.
